Biogeography of European land mammals shows environmentally distinct and spatially coherent clusters

چکیده
Zoogeography, the subdivision of geographical space into regional subunits based on their fauna, has been a core activity of biology at least since the time of Wallace (1876). Originally its emphasis was on entire faunas and geographical units at the subcontinental or regional level (see the comprehensive review in Udvardy, 1969), but progress in the understanding of the spatial dynamics of metapopulations (Hanski, 1999; Hanski & Caggiotti, 2004) has shifted the focus towards single species and local scales. However, the question of how species are distributed in time and space remains a central research theme at all levels of scaling. Indeed, Holt & Keitt (2005) have recently argued that species borders qualify as a ‘unifying theme’ in ecology. After reviewing the current understanding of single-species borders, they make a plea for research that HIIT Basic Research Unit, Laboratory of Computer and Information Science, Helsinki University of Technology, PO Box 5400, Helsinki, FI-02015 HUT, Finland, Department of Geology and Institute of Biotechnology, PO Box 64, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, FIN-00014, Finland, and HIIT Basic Research Unit, Department of Computer Science, PO Box 68, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, FIN-00014, Finland

Analysis of urban land utilize by using optimization algorithm based on biogeography Case study: Semnan County
Urban land utilize planning, for optimal use of existing facilities and urban spaces is one of the main cores of urban planning, which is usually defined as a multi-objective issue. In line with the absence of specific categorization, system for land use in Iran the use of metaheuristic algorithm and artificial intelligence is required. One of the algorithms that introduced and used in recent y...
متن کاملAccurate delineation of biogeographical regions depends on the use of an appropriate distance measure
The use of analytical techniques to delineate biogeographical regions is becoming increasingly popular. One recent example, Heikinheimo et al. (Journal of Biogeography, 2007, 34, 1053–1064), applied the k-means clustering algorithm to define the biogeography of the European land mammal fauna. However, they used the Euclidean distance measure to cluster grid cells described by species-occurrence...
متن کاملDiversity and biogeography of land snails (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in the limestone hills of Perak, Peninsular Malaysia
Limestone hills are now gaining global conservation attention as hotspots for short-range endemic species. Levels of land snail endemism can be high at limestone hills, especially at hill clusters that are geographically isolated. In the State of Perak, Peninsular Malaysia, limestone hills have been opportunistically surveyed for land snails in the past, but the majority have yet to be surveyed...
متن کاملTesting the Effectiveness of Environmental Variables to Explain European Terrestrial Vertebrate Species Richness across Biogeographical Scales
We compared the effectiveness of environmental variables, and in particular of land-use indicators, to explain species richness patterns across taxonomic groups and biogeographical scales (i.e. overall pan-Europe and ecoregions within pan-Europe). Using boosted regression trees that handle non-linear relationships, we compared the relative influence (as a measure of effectiveness) of environmen...
متن کاملImpact of urban land cover change on land surface temperature
The rapid growth in urban population is seen to create a need for the development of more urban infrastructures. In order to meet this need, natural surfaces such as vegetation are been replaced with non-vegetated surfaces such as asphalt and bricks which has the ability to absorb heat and release it later. This change in land cover is seen to increase the land surface temperature. Previous stu...
